Escape, which seeks a subversive association through the duplicity of both espace and escape, brings together screenshots taken from gay chatrooms. It records the abstract images created as a result of the subject avoiding the frame and closing off the camera angle, all the while seeking new narratives, wherever they may be hiding in the obstructed view. These chatrooms, which more or less constitute the foundations of early internet culture, have witnessed the anxieties of visibility and recognition, all the while retaining the strange excitement of potential new encounters.

In his very soul he tasted the bestial degradation of his fall. The unhappy man woke from his dream shattered, unhinged, powerless in the demon’s grip. He no longer avoided men’s eyes nor cared whether he exposed himself to suspicion.
